The Podosphere's daily intelligence brief for podcast industry operators.
Issue #38 · Monday, October 5, 2026 · 3 min read
Two ad-era casualties and a research webinar point the same direction today: the podcast advertising model that built the last six years is wobbling, and operators are hunting for new ways to hold an audience directly.
Today: Network shuts down · Ad platform closes · Newsletters over platforms · Hosts drive loyalty · Video data added
1. Fable and Folly Network closes, citing podcast advertising shifts
The audio fiction network, home to more than 200 shows since 2020, will close December 31 after six years, saying it can't keep pace with changes in podcast advertising. It will spend the rest of the year helping producers migrate to new hosting and advertising partners and has paused Fable and Folly Plus subscriptions as of October 6.
Why it matters: Hosting and ad-sales partners should expect a wave of displaced fiction producers shopping for new homes before year end.

2. Podcorn, rebranded as Audacy Creator Lab, shuts down
Podcorn, which had been operating as Audacy Creator Lab, is shutting down, and podcasters who used its feed prefix must remove it by the end of the month.
Why it matters: Creators using the Podcorn prefix need to update feeds now or risk broken distribution once the service disappears.

3. Goalhanger bets on newsletters to know its own audience
Goalhanger drew 1.8 billion views and streams in 2025 but says platforms reveal little about who those listeners are, so it hired an editorial director and launched newsletters for five of its 14 shows. The Rest Is Politics and The Rest Is History have seen 500% and 400% subscriber growth since launching theirs.
Why it matters: Networks relying solely on Apple and Spotify data should note that owned email channels are becoming the way publishers claw back audience data and build direct monetization.

4. Study: a fifth of superfans will quit a show if the host leaves
The Podcast Study 2026, from Strategic Solutions Research and Point-to-Point Marketing, found 21% of podcast superfans say they'd definitely stop listening if a show's host left, and 18% abandon a new podcast within its first minute.
Why it matters: Networks negotiating host contracts or testing co-host rotations should weigh how much of a show's retained value rides on one person's voice.

5. PodAnalyst folds YouTube into its listener dashboard
PodAnalyst now pulls in YouTube video performance alongside Apple Podcasts and Spotify data, adding an engaged views metric to sit beside engaged listeners. The platform also launched Readout, a one-click performance report, and says it now tracks over 40 million unique listeners across 600-plus shows.
Why it matters: Hosting and analytics rivals should watch how fast cross-platform video measurement becomes table stakes as advertisers demand consistent numbers across audio and video.
