Recording software or editing software?

Recording software captures the conversation. For remote guests, the tools to look for record each person on their own computer and upload a separate track, so a bad connection does not ruin the audio: Riverside, Zencastr and Descript (which now includes SquadCast) work this way, and CleanFeed records live, broadcast-style audio in the browser.

Editing software turns the raw recording into an episode: cutting mistakes, levelling voices and removing noise. Audacity, Hindenburg, Adobe Audition and Pro Tools are editors. Descript, Riverside and Alitu do both, which is simpler but ties your workflow to one company.

Editing by transcript

Descript, Riverside and Hindenburg let you edit by editing the transcript: remove a sentence from the text and it disappears from the audio. For interviews and talk shows this is much faster than working with waveforms, and you need to know far less about audio.

Waveform editors such as Audacity, Audition and Pro Tools give you finer control over sound, which matters more for music, sound design and heavily produced shows.

What it costs

You can make a podcast for nothing: record remote guests on Zencastr's or CleanFeed's free plan and edit in Audacity or Pro Tools Intro. Descript also has a free plan for trying it on a real episode.

Paid plans that most podcasters shortlist cost $12 to $38 a month billed monthly: Hindenburg Standard $12, Descript Hobbyist $24, Riverside Pro $35, CleanFeed Pro $36 and Alitu $38. Most are cheaper billed yearly (Descript Hobbyist $16, Riverside Pro $24, Hindenburg $8.25). Descript charges per person, so each extra editor adds to the bill.

Which one fits your show

An interview show with remote guests on video: Riverside, or Zencastr if you want to start free. A talk show you want to edit quickly: Descript. Audio-only interviews where sound quality matters most: CleanFeed to record and Hindenburg to edit.

Your first show, and you do not want to learn editing: Alitu. No budget: Zencastr or CleanFeed to record, Audacity to edit. Already working in Adobe's tools: Audition.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get good sound when recording a podcast remotely?↓

Record each person on their own track, locally on their own computer: Riverside, Zencastr and SquadCast all do this, so a bad internet moment does not reach the recording. Ask every guest to wear headphones, sit in a small soft-furnished room, and use a wired connection if they can. A $60 to $100 USB microphone beats a laptop microphone by more than any software setting.

For remote interviews on video, Riverside: each guest is recorded on their own track in up to 4K and 48kHz audio, from $35 a month or $24 billed yearly. Zencastr does the same for free with up to 6 participants. For audio only, CleanFeed has a free plan that allows commercial use.
