The Podosphere's daily intelligence brief for podcast industry operators.
Issue #37 · Friday, October 2, 2026 · 3 min read
Netflix's first-year podcast push and a shrinking native-app share dominate today's numbers, while measurement fragmentation keeps costing the industry real money.
Today: Platform shift · Smart TV rising · Measurement fight · Beehiiv's podcast play
1. Netflix vaults to third place in podcast platforms, native apps keep shrinking
Sounds Profitable's census-weighted survey of 5,473 US adults found reach steady at 74%, but platform use is reshaping fast: YouTube leads at 63%, Spotify at 33%, and Netflix hit 21% in its first year offering podcasts, ahead of Apple Podcasts at 15%. Podcast-native apps as a most-used platform fell from 19% to 15%, with Apple Podcasts alone dropping from 11% to 8%.
Why it matters: Discovery and retention strategies built around dedicated podcast apps are fighting a shrinking share of actual consumption.

2. Smart TVs are the only device gaining ground, and YouTube owns that screen
Net Influencer's coverage of the same report found smart TV podcast consumption rose from 8% in 2024 to 12% in 2026, the only device category gaining share, while desktop fell. Among smart-TV viewers using multiple apps, 71% named YouTube their top app versus 12% for Netflix.
Why it matters: Video and living-room distribution are becoming a real battleground, not a side bet, for where podcast attention actually lives.

3. Three CEOs agree: measurement chaos is the industry's real ceiling
At Podcast Movement NYC, Acast's Greg Glenday, Oxford Road's Dan Granger and Triton Digital's Sharon Taylor told Sounds Profitable that scale came from alignment, M&A integration and capital access. Granger said inconsistent metrics put over $1 billion in advertiser confidence at risk, prompting his Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting, while Glenday estimated 400 of the top 500 global advertisers still have room to spend on podcasts.
Why it matters: Standardized measurement, not audience growth, is what's gating the next wave of ad dollars entering the category.

4. Beehiiv's first podcast hire bets on becoming a creator operating system
Podcast Perspectives published a conversation with Ainsley Rossitto, Beehiiv's newly hired first Head of Podcasts, who said adoption splits roughly 50/50 between existing newsletter users adding podcasts and net-new podcasters. Dynamic ad insertion and a campaign manager are on the roadmap.
Why it matters: A newsletter platform entering podcast hosting with monetization tools adds a new kind of competitor to an already crowded hosting market.
