Signal #47: Spreaker's copy problem gets a number

The Podosphere's daily intelligence brief for podcast industry operators.

Issue #47 · Tuesday, October 27, 2026 · 3 min read

Podnews put a figure on podcast piracy today, and it lands on one platform: Spreaker.

Today: Spreaker piracy, by the numbers · Five days to chart · Listeners churn less · beehiiv adds ad tools

1. Spreaker's open RSS import turns into a piracy pipeline

Podnews found 1,778 shows duplicated on Spreaker from publishers including PodcastOne, Vox Media, Goalhanger and SiriusXM, copied via a free-account RSS import with no ownership check, then approved for ad monetization within hours. Spreaker's terms let it keep up to 41% of ad revenue on those copies.

Why it matters: Any host with open RSS import needs an ownership check before it enables monetization, or it risks becoming a pipe for stolen catalogs and ad dollars.

2. A creator's own chart data shows how fast a copy can catch up

Lisa Lacy of Notes From the Edge found her show copied onto Spreaker with automatic episode importing and apparent ad monetization enabled, and the copy reached #121 on Apple's US Personal Journals chart within five days while her original sat at #1. She has since written five steps to protect a podcast and founded PodProtect.

Why it matters: Networks and hosts need a monitoring routine for catalog duplication, since a copy can reach discovery surfaces before a creator even notices it exists.

3. Listening, not just subscribing, is what keeps members paying

Supporting Cast's analysis of six partners found subscribers who activated audio benefits churned at 1.3% a month versus 3% for non-listeners, 28% to 81% less likely to cancel depending on the partner. Over three years nearly three-quarters of non-listeners leave versus fewer than 40% of listeners.

Why it matters: Membership and subscription platforms should treat feed activation as the retention lever to optimize, not an afterthought after signup.

4. beehiiv bundles podcast ad tools into its newsletter platform

beehiiv launched dynamic ad insertion, programmatic advertising and sponsorship management on all paid plans with no minimum download requirement, and its measurement is IAB-certified. CEO Tyler Denk said video hosting and distribution are coming before year end.

Why it matters: Standalone ad-sales and DAI vendors now compete with a newsletter platform that is folding podcast monetization into a tool creators already use daily.
