Overcast is a free podcast player app designed for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Developed as a solo project by Marco Arment, the app has operated as a self-funded business for over 11 years without external investors or corporate backing.

The app features Smart Speed technology that dynamically shortens silences in talk shows to help users save listening time without audio distortion. Voice Boost normalizes and amplifies audio levels so all podcasts play at consistent volumes, making it easier to listen in noisy environments. Most features are available for free and supported by small visual ads that promote podcasts, while an annual subscription offers additional features and can remove advertisements.

Overcast works with the open podcast ecosystem using standard RSS feeds. Podcasters can make their shows available on the platform by simply adding them to Apple Podcasts, with all downloads going directly to their own servers rather than through a separate platform.
