Podcast advertising just hit a 12-year high. Apple's video podcast expansion is now in public beta. And new research draws a clear line between what listeners trust and what the industry is rushing toward. Three things moving in the same direction today β€” and one sharp data point that should stop you in your tracks.

Today: Podcast ad interest at 12-year high Β· SpotsNow AI fills unsold inventory Β· Apple Podcasts video on Mac & Apple TV Β· 46% of listeners would skip AI-hosted shows

1. Podcast ad interest hits a 12-year high β€” and new tooling is arriving to match

Westwood One released new research: 76% of agencies and advertisers currently buy podcast ads β€” a 5x increase over the past 12 years. On the same day, SpotsNow launched AI Search for podcast ad buyers: a tool that surfaces shows matched to audience criteria and, critically, last-minute unsold inventory matched to the same criteria.

Why it matters: Demand-side confidence is at a generational high. The agencies have arrived. The tooling is starting to catch up. Every hosting platform, ad network, and DAI provider benefits when buyers treat podcasting as a standard line item β€” not an experimental budget.

2. Apple Podcasts video is in public beta β€” Mac and Apple TV now in scope

The iOS 27, tvOS 27, and macOS 27 public betas are live for anyone. That puts Apple Podcasts video on the Mac desktop and a redesigned Apple TV app (new sidebar, video playback, show artwork) in front of early-adopter audiences β€” not just developers. The Apple TV redesign is notable: it's the first time Apple TV gets a proper podcast video experience, not just AirPlay workarounds.

Why it matters: The surface area for video podcasting just expanded significantly. Hosting partners with HLS ingestion live (Acast, Captivate, Transistor, Riverside, RSS.com, and 9 others) should be activating show-level video now. Public beta audiences are the engaged early adopters β€” your best listeners.

3. 46% of listeners would skip an AI-hosted show

Clutch released a podcast listener survey with two sharp findings: 46% of listeners would reject a podcast that's AI-hosted or heavily AI-generated. But 62% don't care whether their host is a celebrity or completely unknown. The celebrity premium is dead. The authenticity premium is not.

Why it matters: The industry is racing toward AI-native audio. Listeners are pulling the other direction. The tools that win in this environment will amplify human voices β€” not replace them. If your product roadmap leans on AI hosting as a feature, this data is your product problem statement.

4. Podtrac launches Promo Trades β€” free cross-promotion for any podcaster

Podtrac launched Promo Trades, a free service that lets podcasters grow by trading promos in other shows. Podtrac's Promo Platform has been used by large shows to accelerate growth; this extends it to anyone.

Why it matters: Cross-promo has always been effective but operationally messy β€” manual emails, mismatched audience sizes, no tracking. A centralized platform changes the friction profile entirely. Watch this one.

Worth a Click

  • Podpage launches episode email alerts β€” email your subscribers automatically when a new episode drops. Simple, but most podcast websites still don't have it.
  • On Purpose with Jay Shetty moves to Spotify + Netflix, starting with Millie Bobby Brown β€” previously iHeartMedia. Platform consolidation continues for big names.
