Descript and Riverside now both record and edit, so the choice comes down to where each one started. Riverside is built around recording remote video interviews; Descript is built around editing by transcript. Descript charges per person. The free plan lets you try transcript editing and the AI tools on a real project. Hobbyist is $24 a month ($16 billed yearly) with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits a month and 1080p export without a watermark. Creator, the plan most people choose, is $35 ($24 yearly) with 30 media hours, 800 AI credits, 4K export and the stock media library. Business is $65 ($50 yearly) with 40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits, Brand Studio and translation. Enterprise is priced on request.

Riverside has no free plan, but every paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial. Pro is $35 a month ($24 billed yearly) with 4K video, 48kHz audio, no watermark, unlimited text-based editing and transcription, and 15 hours a month of separate-track downloads. Grow is $45 ($34 yearly) and adds live streaming to unlimited destinations, hosting for two shows and 20 hours of downloads. Webinar is $99 ($79 yearly). Business is priced by Riverside's sales team.

For one person, the two cost exactly the same billed yearly at the level most podcasters need: $24 a month for Descript Creator or Riverside Pro. The difference shows up with a team. Descript charges each person; Riverside charges per account and sells extra editor seats as an add-on.

Recording

Riverside records each participant on their own device and uploads separate audio and video tracks, so a weak internet connection does not damage the recording. Pro records up to 4K video and 48kHz audio. Grow adds live streaming, so you can broadcast and record the same session.

Descript records too. SquadCast, the remote recording service, has joined Descript, and its website now sends you to Descript's plans. Descript's recording features include remote sessions (Rooms) and screen recording.

If recording remote guests on video is the hard part of your show, Riverside is the safer choice: recording is what it was built for.

Editing

Descript made editing by transcript mainstream: delete a sentence in the text and it disappears from the audio and video. Its tools include Studio Sound for cleaning up voices, filler-word removal, clip creation, eye contact correction and AI voice regeneration, and Underlord, its AI co-editor.

Riverside also edits by transcript now, with unlimited text-based editing, filler-word and silence removal, AI B-roll and Magic Clips on every paid plan.

If editing is where you spend your time, Descript is still the deeper editor, and its free plan lets you find out whether transcript editing suits you before you pay.
