Signal #29: An app is eating your ad impressions. Your analytics won't show it.

The Podosphere's daily intelligence brief for podcast industry operators.
Issue #29 Β· Wednesday, July 22, 2026 Β· 3 min read

An app just started eating your ad impressions β€” and your download stats will never show it. Meanwhile, IAB dropped new measurement guidelines for public comment, and the AMP Accords land tomorrow. It's a week of reckoning for how podcasting gets counted and paid.

Today: Ad-skipping goes invisible Β· IAB rewrites the measurement rules Β· Social platforms ARE podcasting now Β· Bari Weiss joins Big Media

1. An Ad-Skipping App Just Became Invisible to Your Stats

Podtastic is a new podcast app that skips ads for $2.99/month β€” and it's built to evade detection. The app downloads MP3s directly, then identifies itself in server logs as Safari v604.1. Your analytics platform sees a web browser, not an ad-skipping client. Download numbers: unchanged. Ad effectiveness: degraded. Advertiser rebooking confidence: the one that pays the real price.

The app is produced by Freewheel Group Ltd. and is careful never to use the word "ads" β€” it promises to "automatically skip past the interruptions other listeners skip." Creator revenue: zero. Apple App Store terms compliance: an open question.

Why it matters: Download counts are already an imperfect proxy for ad exposure. An undetectable ad-skipping app makes that gap worse. If it gains traction, it's a pressure point for host-read and programmatic alike.

2. IAB Podcast Measurement v2.3 Is Out. The AMP Accords Land Tomorrow.

The IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines v2.3 dropped for public comment. Key additions: HLS delivery (used by Apple Podcasts for video-enabled shows) is confirmed as progressive download and covered by the guidelines; an expanded section on prefix measurement variance, noting different certified companies can produce numbers ~5% apart by methodology; and a call-out that changing the audio URL can prompt a Spotify re-download even if the episode was already cached.

Tomorrow: the AMP Accords release. Unlike IAB's download-centric framework, AMP measures consumption β€” what was actually listened to, not just delivered.

Why it matters: Download counts measure delivery. Consumption counts measure listening. If AMP establishes a new standard, every hosting platform, analytics tool, and ad network will need to update their reporting layer. This is the most consequential measurement shift in years.

3. YouTube Reaches 82% of Podcast Listeners. Audio Podcasting Reaches 36%.

New Sounds Profitable Podcast Atlas data (Part 4, by Tom Webster): YouTube reaches 82% of podcast listeners monthly. Facebook reaches 80%. Audio podcasts β€” the entire medium β€” reach 36%. And 37% of listeners consume podcast content on Facebook β€” more than on Spotify (28%) or Apple Podcasts (18%).

Webster's framing: social platforms aren't competing with podcasting on quality metrics (trust, attention, credibility). They're the denominator β€” the size of the room. Podcasting is the numerator β€” what happens inside it. Buying YouTube for reach is sound. Buying it for ad quality is not: 61% of YouTube users say it has too many ads, and 49% of its most engaged users actively disagree that ads are non-disruptive.

Why it matters: RSS-only distribution reaches at most 36% of your potential audience. The platforms that weren't built for podcasting are where the audience lives now. Distribution strategy has to account for the denominator.

4. Bari Weiss to CBS News. PAVE Studios Expanding.

Following Mike Pesca's announcement that he's ending The Gist after 3,000 episodes, Bari Weiss has signed with CBS News as Editorial Director of Podcasts. Separately, PAVE Studios β€” Max Cutler's creator studio β€” is adding a new roster of true crime creators, journalists, and podcast hosts.

Why it matters: Big Media is still betting on editorial podcast talent at the executive level. And the creator-to-studio pipeline is active β€” PAVE's pitch is exactly the development infrastructure that independent podcasters can't self-fund.
