The Podosphere's daily intelligence brief for podcast industry operators.
EP. 027 Β· Monday, July 20, 2026 Β· 3 min read

WARC's annual YouTube report dropped today with a number the podcast industry wasn't ready for: more than 700 million hours of podcasts watched on YouTube TV screens per month β€” up 70% year-over-year. YouTube has overtaken Spotify for podcast viewing. At the same time, a new free iOS app called Drea is stripping host-read ads with no way to block it. Both stories point to the same pressure: the assumption that podcast audiences are mobile, audio-first, and ad-tolerant is eroding simultaneously from two directions.

Today: YouTube overtakes Spotify for podcast viewing Β· Netflix distribution moves the charts Β· An app that strips host-read ads Β· PodKit: $15/mo podcast API with MCP support

1. YouTube has overtaken Spotify for podcast viewing

WARC's latest annual report reveals viewers watched more than 700 million hours of podcasts on YouTube via TV screens in a single month β€” up 70% year-over-year. YouTube has overtaken Spotify for podcast viewing. Connected TV now accounts for 45% of YouTube's total US watch time, with average sessions exceeding 45 minutes and completion rates of 95%+. YouTube's total ad revenue hit $40.4B in 2025, and ad-supported streaming music now claims 15% of US audio listening time, up 36.4% YoY, while radio's share slipped to 62%.
Why it matters: The podcast audience is moving to the living room. Operators still optimizing for mobile audio feeds are becoming invisible to a growing slice of their potential audience β€” and to the TV ad dollars following them there.

2. Netflix distribution just moved the podcast charts

Edison Research released the Q2 2026 top 50 US podcasts. The standout: The Bill Simmons Podcast β€” now visible on Netflix β€” jumped 17 positions to crack the top 25 for the first time. British history podcast The Rest Is History entered the top 50 for the first time. Hosting breakdown: Simplecast hosts 17 of the top 50, Megaphone hosts 16, Omny Studio 4.
Why it matters: Netflix distribution is now chart-relevant for audio podcasts. Shows available on connected TV platforms are gaining discoverability that pure-audio distribution doesn't deliver.

3. A free iOS app strips host-read ads β€” and it can't be blocked

Drea is a new free iOS podcast app that removes ads using cloud LLMs and audio fingerprinting. Podnews testing found it correctly removes host-read ads with no false positives β€” the first tool they've found that does this. The kicker: Drea spoofs Apple Podcasts' user-agent (Podcasts/4025.610.1), making it nearly impossible for hosts or networks to detect and block. The developer confirmed this was intentional. Episodes are downloaded before playback, so there's no real-time intercept hook.
Why it matters: Host-read ads are podcasting's most defensible ad format. An unblockable ad-removal tool targeting them specifically is a real monetization threat, not a theoretical one. If it scales, ad buyers will notice download inflation.

4. PodKit: podcast search API at $15/mo β€” with MCP support for AI agents

PodKit launched as a new API for podcast search, metadata, chapters, and transcripts at $15/month with a free tier β€” positioning directly against competitors at $75+. It ships with MCP (Model Context Protocol) support, meaning AI agents and LLM-powered tools can query podcast data natively without custom integrations.
Why it matters: The podcast data infrastructure layer just got 5x cheaper. For developers building podcast tools and AI-powered workflows, PodKit signals that the next generation of podcast APIs is being designed for the agent era, not just web apps.
